NY Drug Store

First of all, my apologies for the lack of updates recently. It’s been a little hectic! I have some good stuff to share with you all so I may go back and add some final images to some of the previous posts.
Recently I had the opportunity to be a part of the Eddie Adam’s Workshop in Jeffersonville, NY which was a great experience. This post isn’t about the workshop but it is about something related to it. We had some time to go out and shoot some pictures so instead of photographing the fall foliage which we did the day before we found something much more interesting.
I was with my co-workers Kris, Sara and Nancy and we went to a place that Sara and Kris accidentally drove by a few days before and wanted to go back to. It was a small street off of RT.17 in upstate NY that had some interesting looking old buildings. When we went back there we noticed this old drug store on the corner that had a lot of charm to it. Well, Kris pointed out that she saw someone walking around inside. Then out of the front door came a young woman who was inquiring as to who we were and what we were doing there. We told her about the workshop and that we were just out taking some pictures. When asked what she was doing she started to cry and said that this was her grandfather’s store and it was going to be torn down to expand the highway close by. It seems as though here grandparents passed away without a will and the store was left to the town to do what they will with it. So, she and her mom and sister were there trying to gather as many family heirlooms as possible. I really feel for them... it is an overwhelming task.
This store was in bad shape and the task of figuring out what was important to save must have been overwhelming. It seems as though they had no legal recourse and that the building was going to be taken down within a month...which may be just after the writing of this post. After gaining some comfort with them we were invited in and we found an absolute treasure chest of images and one heck of a photo story.
I started to take pictures in color but it just didn’t have the right look. I decided to shoot in black and white and in doing so I was much more inspired at what I was seeing and the type of photographs I was making. We spent about two hours there and will all put together some sort of album of images so they have the memories.
Instead of posting images here in this post since there are quite a few I put together an online album for you to see. So, let me know if this format works for you... so, click on the arrow in the box below.
All images were with the Nikon D700 and 24-70mm lens.
