Lake Effect Snow
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Sometimes you just gotta love living below Lake Michigan! When we moved to NW Indiana in 2000 I thought that “lake effect snow” was just for people who lived in Buffalo, NY! Well, I was wrong! Granted, we get our share of regular winter storms that come crawling through the plain states, mess up Chicago and then make us look like a winter wonderland. But, when it comes to a low pressure system making its exit over Michigan the winds shift and blow straight south over Lake Michigan, pick up a bunch of moisture (when the lake isn’t frozen over) and then dump it right on our house! It can be sunny and beautiful just a few miles in either direction and a complete bizzard right in this area.
Now, don’t think that I am complaining about this... That usually happens in mid to late March if this cycle keeps up! ;-) I really love the snow and I love AWD vehicles! I decided to go out this morning and grab some images before the wind starts to blow all the snow off of the trees. I would have stayed out longer and brought more than just a D700 and a 24-70mm lens but it’s Michelle’s car and she had to go to work.
As a bonus, I started a time lapse movie of this whole event yesterday with a Coolpix P6000 camera on a tripod in the front window of our house... It’s a big file (80MB) and may take some of you extra time to download so I posted it on a separate page... So, if you’d like to check it out then click HERE...
Like I said... I love AWD vehicles. This Hyundai Santa Fe is great in the snow!
The next couple of images were taken here at Soldiers Memorial Park.
Don’t try this at home kids. This next one was taken with my right eye while driving with my left... I was going pretty slow, however!
These last two were taken in my back yard. This is the pond that backs up to my neighbors and my property.
And, just for measurement sake... here are the stairs to my deck. :-)
I anticipate it being a real fun winter!
