Well, I’m back... and let the games (or travels) begin! This week I’m at the Imaging USA show in Phoenix, Arizona. It’s one of the bigger shows that Nikon does for the year and it is in a place that I have only been to once. The last time I was here was for a sales meeting quite a few years ago and we only spent our time at a hotel and never really saw the town or the surrounding area at all. Yesterday morning five of us hopped in a car and got some time to shoot at South Mountain Park just outside of the city during sunrise.
Mike Corrado just before sunrise...
Joining me were Mike Corrado and Kris Bosworth from Nikon, Dave Black and Tom Bol. After being warned to watch out for rattle snakes we headed in the dark up a series of trails from the parking lot and started to shoot. One of the first images I saw was this strange rock formation against the quickly brightening sky that looked like a profile of a face... weird.
I found an area with a couple of really tall catus’ that I decided to stay in and wait for the light to change. It was good to just explore a small area and concentrate on a couple of subjects rather than try to find a bunch of different places and maybe miss some of the great light because I was going back and forth too much.
I traveled real light for this... I had a D90 with the 18-105VR lens and that’s it. That was good and bad all at the same time. Tom Bol and I were discussing the fact that we wish we had a 70-300mm lens with us. He was stuck with a 24-70 on a D3X... So, we both talked about what a good lesson it is to sometimes carry less with you. It makes you think more. (Although I really wish I had my 70-300mm with me!)
Here’s a picture of Dave Black, me and Tom Bol. Check out their sites for some fantastic stuff. One of the new and cool toys I had with me was the new Nikon GP-1 GPS device attached to my camera. So click here for the location of the image below... It’s pretty cool. I’m going to work on this a bit more to see the best way to give you location details for images that I use the GP-1 for in the future... Gotta love technology!
